Northern Wasco County Parks & Recreation District (NWCPRD) is proud to announce the dedication and grand opening of the Northern Wasco County Aquatic Center on Saturday, June 20th. Festivities will commence at 1:00pm with opening remarks and ribbon cutting ceremony. The grand opening is a family friendly event with music, food, family activities, and free swimming. Festivities are planned from 1-4pm with swimming open to the public until 6pm.
General Contractor Triplett Wellman broke ground in October 2014 and is expected to be completed before the grand opening on June 20th. Final inspections will occur the week of June 15th and the facility may open to the public a day or two before the 20th once final approval is received from the Oregon Health Authority. “Parks District staff are eager to open the Northern Wasco County Aquatic Center to the public as soon as circumstances allow,” says NWCPRD Executive Director Phil Lewis. Members of the community who wish to stay up to date on information related to the Aquatic Center are encouraged to follow their website and social media accounts.
Located at 602 West 2nd Street in The Dalles, the Aquatic Center replaced the crumbling Ted Walker Memorial Pool that was originally built in the 1930’s and was no longer structurally sound. The new Aquatic Center will boast some highly anticipated additions. Amenities of the project include a 50 meter 8-lane pool, 140 foot water slide, diving board, aqua climbing wall, on deck grass enclosure, family change rooms, 1,800 square foot splash pad, and second level Parks District offices.
Construction of Northern Wasco County Aquatic Center was made possible through a general obligation bond measure passed by District voters. Additional funds were contributed through City of The Dalles & Wasco County Enterprise Zone, Columbia Gateway Urban Renewal Agency, and Oregon State Parks.
